Question 2

your company holds an annual spring cleaning day where all the employees help clean the office. your boss has asked everyone to complete a survey to indicate their preference of job.

which option would you prefer?

Option A : clean up outside the building

Option B : clean up inside the building

 SAMPLE ANSWER

I personally deem cleaning the inside premises of the office would be a better idea. Even though, exterior of the building convey professional image to the clients, associates and visitors, I believe inside cleaning of the workplace would increase staff morale and productivity.

An unclean work environment is an excellent breeding ground for various germs and allergens. I think a clean office environment is the key to efficiency. Regular and thorough cleaning will reduce superficial bacteria and increase the air quality, producing a happier, healthier and more relaxed environment all around.

Another reason why I think cleaning office from inside would be a great idea is because tidy work environment implies superior, quality products and services.

Considering these reasons, I believe having a clean and healthy workplace is a major cornerstone when it comes to running a successful business. Again, this is my personal opinion, but I will support whatever decision is made.

Thanks for giving me a chance to provide my input on this issue.

some people say now there is less communication between the family members than in the past. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer (Band 9.0)

Interaction has been the prime factor of socialization for ages. However, of late, it has been hugely influenced by technological advancements. So, compared with the past, social interaction is becoming increasingly fierce. Hence, the importance of bonds of kinship is gradually fading from people’s minds. In my opinion, the world has become a global village yet in many sense it has grown apart.

Apparently, the family ties are becoming  weaker. There are several reasons behind this unfortunate development. The most important, of course, is the change in our lifestyle, values, and goals. Owing to huge educational burden, intense competition, and 24/7 work commitments especially in developing countries  has put a huge pressure on young generation leaving a little room for them to spend time with family members and enjoy on family occasions.

Secondly, the blurring line between real and virtual life such as easy access to social media, internet browsing,  various applications and games on mobile itself engage youth and capture major chunk of the day. As per a survey conducted by American Youth Association, the millennial prefer to spend 80% of their idle time on internet and a meager of 5 % of their time with family. Thirdly, people are increasingly moving to another city or country in search of better education, jobs or living standards. They leave their family behind. While it is possible to keep in touch through modern communication means, an email or phone calls is not equal to face-to-face interaction. Lastly, we are living in the age of individualism. Everyone needs their space. This has made us more self-centered than our parents or grandparents. We no longer believe in making adjustments or compromises. We want everything our way. This attitude creates strain in our relationships.

Overall, with the hustle and bustle of our lives and the maddening rush of proving oneself, most people have lost the daily connect with family members. But we must realise that our biggest strength is our family. Relationships are like potted plants. We need to nourish them. If we don’t give them love and affection they need, they will wilt.

some people think that killing animals for food is cruel, but others claim that animals are necessary part of diet. What is your opinion?

Sample Answer (Band 9.0)

Owing to the lack of knowledge of cultivation, human species was largely hinges on Animals as their food. But with the evolution, human beings begin to settle at one place and started exploring plants as possible sources of food. This development leads to creation of two groups namely carnivorous and Herbivorous. There has been raging debate on the issue as whether consuming animals as food is cruel or a essential part of diet. However, I firmly assert that animals should not be slaughtered for food.

To begin with, every living creature has a right to live and we have no right to kill any creature to satisfy our own appetite. Secondly, over exploitation of certain species will lead to its extinctions thus disturbing the ecological balance. A disruption in the hierarchy of the ecosystem will pose grave threat to the mother nature. To exemplify, a recent survey conducted by UN revealed that by the end of 2030, there will be a slump in the number of marine creatures such as fishes and crabs by 70%.

Thirdly, the animals are often treated so miserably in the slaughterhouses. They suffer from many ailments and their bodies are full of bruises. The meat of these diseased animals when consumed by humans give rise to many problems like high blood pressure, and heart diseases. And finally, all the animals are adorable and seek human love, thus , in order to satisfy our taste buds, they should not be killed. Killing any living being is even against human morals and ethics. For instance, a recent study by PETA showed the heart wrenching conditions of animals in slaughterhouses of UK and also revealed that there has been an increase in the non vegetarian people suffering from heart problem by 10%.

To conclude, mother nature has created all the species and human beings the most intelligent and evolved species should use their intelligence in constructive and humane tasks. We all should be loving and humble towards other species as human survival is impossible without other creatures.

Ordinary people copy famous people whom they see on TV and magazines. Do you think it is a positive development? writing task 2

Ordinary people copy famous people whom they see on TV and magazines. Do you think it is a positive development?

Sample Answer (Band 8.0)

Admittedly, TV and magazines are what cater to the quest for leisure. Celebrities play a pivotal role in the subjective orientation of people and it is indubitable to say that since time immemorial, common man is drawn towards imitating celebs whom they ardently follow; be it on TV soap operas or Journals. However, in my contention this trend stems a mixed bag of both boon and bane.

Certainly, famous people have monumental influence on our lives. Firstly, Celebrities often display extremely developed skills, which can help to spur young people towards a life full of physically active. For instance, school children are often driven to exercise in an attempt to emulate superstars, such as Novak Djokovic, Ronaldo, Messi. Secondly, teenagers can also take valuable lessons from their idols mistakes. Since celebrities actions are often publicized, adolescents have the opportunities to observe various examples of misconducts and learn from them. For example, upon hearing the doping accusation of Louis Armstrong, many of the biker fans realize that there is no shortcut to success which leads to success and honesty should be of paramount Importance.  Thirdly, celebs set a good example of how to live and act. Illustratively, some are involved in humanitarian efforts such as fighting social injustices, raising money for sick or injured people, supporting relief efforts when extreme weather damages a community, contributing financially to hospitals or hosting free events to support philanthropic efforts.

Perhaps, in the 21st century, the impact of celebrity culture on society, especially on young people, has come under scrutiny. The rise and dominance of social media sites such as instagram and their links to glorification of “super-skinny” celebrities have been cited as influences in the rise of eating disorders in young people. Also, if their favorite celeb has 6 pack abs, they also try to achieve such a body, and to do so quickly, they have to consume a lot of unhealthy supplements, which may not be good for them. Another negative effect of this development is that if these celebs drink or smoke in public, the common people think it is a sort of status symbol and do the same. They want to achieve the comfortable lifestyle and costly cars and other such possessions without doing hard work. As a result, crime incidences are often seen.

Overall, this practice does uphold mixed outcomes, whereas on one hand it creates awareness amidst masses, while paradoxically, on the other hand allures them to indulge in delinquent acts. Hence, it is highly recommended that youth should be encouraged to realize that a man’s real worth is not judged by his possessions, rather by the journey he goes through to achieve those possessions.

Museum is increasingly becoming important in many ways. Still many people argue that maintaining it is very much disadvantageous and some think that it has many utilities in a society. Discuss both the views and give your opinion? WRITING TASK 2

  1. Museum is increasingly becoming important in many ways. Still many people argue that maintaining it is very much disadvantageous and some think that it has many utilities in a society. Discuss both the views and give your opinion?

Sample Answer (8.0)

Unlike in the past, museum has enormously become an integral part of every state. However, there are predominantly two contrasting views over the use of museum where a section of society claim that it poses more number of problems than its blessings and others feel the vice versa for various reasons.

Apparently, it is believed that a museum is an unnecessary liability due to numerous reasons. Firstly, it adds to the fiscal burden on an exchequer as government has to spend massive amount of money on building, preserving and maintaining a museum. To illustrate, the employees and the authorities who maintain a museum need to be paid every month, which comprises a very huge amount. Secondly, it eats away a huge chunk of space in a city pushing city dwellers from pillar to post as every city is faced with unavailability of space with a very high density of population and an alarming number of slums. Thirdly, protection and maintenance of the materials in a museum, which are old and sometimes fragile, need a lot of effort. The fourth reason is that, there are various security threats as the museum contains valuable materials for which a government will have to utilize a fair size of its armed forces. Besides, they argue that the knowledge gained from a museum is outdated and consequently, it will not fetch you any profit.

However,  it is counter argued by another group who believe that a museum is indispensable and beneficial. To begin with, a museum is the only place where the history and the heritage of a  country can be preserved for generations to come. Moreover, they can provide considerable academic help to new generation, especially in archeological studies. Thirdly, a museum can be a tourism booster, which has already become a revenue generating factor for a state. Adding to these, a museum acts as a symbol for the diversity of flora and fauna with a vast line of trees and shrubs. So, public can always enjoy a calming, relaxing and refreshing leisure time in a museum, which adds to the beauty of a city. For example, the Louver museum in Paris elevates the beauty and fame of the city.

In my opinion, a museum meets a wide range of constructive purposes. It is a strong platform offering many a societal utility. It adds to the greenery and grandeur of the city. Therefore, it is the duty of one and all as a state to protect this marvelous piece.

Some people say that computer games are bad for children by all means; others believe that these games are contributing to children’s development. Discuss both views and give your opinion? WRITING TASK 2

  1. Some people say that computer games are bad for children by all means; others believe that these games are contributing to children’s development. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Sample Answer (Band 8.0)

Computer games are dominating as the best source of amusement in this high tech era. From its humble beginnings in the 80s, the video games industry has exploded into 10-billion dollar empire. However there are predominantly two contrasting views where a section of society deems that these adventure games are detrimental for younglings while other emphasis that computer games work as cerebrum secret.

On the one hand, various factors make a section of people advocate that electronic games are destructive for children’s growth and have many reasons to substantiate it. To begin with, computer games tend to corrupt the minds of children. These games can confuse reality and fantasy. Secondly, children become victim of various health hazards such as obesity, weak visions, eye strain. Thirdly, themes of video games are violence, ferocity, destruction of mankind which could be perilous for emotional health of kids. There have been several cases in America, whereas students have done violence acts to their classmates because they were influenced by the games.  Lastly, it binds players in an advanced edge and wrecks their social and family life. Hence, rampant use of these games may disrupt the lives of children physically as well as psychologically.

On the other hand, some believe that computer games are lucrative for overall development of a child and must be preferred for myriad reasons. First and Foremost,  it gives children’s real workout resulting into high level thinking which makes them more creative and skillful. Also, exposes a person to foreign languages in an authentic context. Henceforth, it improves their linguistic ability. Furthermore, a child become quick decision maker under the influence of strategy games like chess, scrabbles are fruitful to improve academic performances. Besides, in shooting games, the character may run and shoot simultaneously which help children think quickly and develop their hand-eye co-ordination and use motor skills and spatial skills. Hence one must invest time in these games.

In my opinion, computer games are entertaining and educative. It helps in releasing stress. Players could feel the excitement of being a heroic character or a professional athlete, without having the risk of being injured or hurt. And some games are created to trigger people’s imaginative thinking, such as Tetris or chess.

  1. Some people think that parents teach children how to be good members of society. Others however believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Sample Answer (9.0)

Growing morally scrupulous and having virtuous qualities have increasingly become a monumental task. Family and school are the two of the institutions which impart it to a man greatly. However, it has become a debatable topic where a category of people claim that molding a child well behaved is the obligation of parents, whereas another section of people believe it to be the prime duty of school for various reasons.

On the one hand, a section of people vehemently deems that parents are the corner stone that can change a young one into an excellent personality with finest mores. Firstly, parents are the true heroes for children because the latter imitates the former like copycat. Secondly, as children spend huge amount of their time with their parents, the latter get more time to guide children to build up a good behavioral pattern. Admittedly, what they learn from their parents is clearly imprinted in their blank minds which later play a pivotal role in framing one’s behavior. To illustrate this, children living in broken family tend to be more violent and ill-mannered than those in stable and peaceful family. Thirdly, family being biggest institution like religion exerts enormous influence in the overall development of personality which ultimately makes him a highly valued citizen with finest etiquettes and patterns of behavior.

On the other hand, some people prefer school to family to mould child’s character for various reasons. To begin with, peer group interaction at school makes a child highly socialized whereby he learns the accepted behavioral patterns from his fellow students. Also, he realizes the importance of being morally scrupulous. Presumably, the tender hearted children do not appreciate wrong doings. Furthermore, various competitions held at school level teach a child to accept the defeat and to appreciate the success so that it makes him a well behaved person in the future. In addition, school teacher’s modes of behavior and manners are well absorbed by students and treated as an epitome for the finest behavior. Above all, teachers, perfect role models, can admonish children for wrong doings and appreciate for good gestures.

In my opinion, elements of both parenthood and schooling together mould a child into respectable individual by making him behave nobly and ethically upright and thereby to become committed member in a society.

Some people say that Television should be used for educational purpose and others believe that it should be used for Entertainment. Discuss both views and give your opinion? WRITING TASK 2

  1. Some people say that Television should be used for educational purpose and others believe that it should be used for Entertainment. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Sample Answer (Band 9.0)

Television, a breakthrough technology, satisfies the quest for variety by connecting one’s living room with heterogeneous facets of life outside. The two main functions served by television are educational and entertainment. However, there are predominantly two contrasting views where a section of society vehemently deems that television ought to be educationally informative while other emphasis on recreational purpose for various reasons.

On the one hand, the proponents of Television for education feel that TV, being an essential part of a modern home, can widely be utilized for educational purpose as it incorporates informative facts that form the very basis of a learning system. The reach of television is so vast that it can carry a huge volume of academic facts to nooks and corners through either a wired network or a satellite dish. To illustrate, Discovery channel provides a lot of information about different topics every day. Moreover, learners are more inclined to believe what they see rather than what they hear as the former stays longer. Now that curriculum has become more learner friendly, visualization of academic data on television channels can fasten the rate of learning. History channel, for instance, has multiplied its rating because of its sole television of world historical events like world wars. Furthermore, television has the social obligation to impart values to the society. For instance, shows and dramas in Singapore are usually focused on family-centric themes of filial piety. Lastly, channels like BBC and National Geographic help people to broaden their horizons and perspectives about other nations.

On the other hand, some believe that television should be used only for entertainment. Television as entertainment medium carries a huge role in easing out work related tension. As modernity is wedded to the practice of work holism, it takes heavy toll on their health. The entertainment can refresh and invigorate the otherwise depressed state of mind by nerve rousing (enthusiastic) visuals of amusing programmes. Television all over the world is famous for providing fun that in turns acts as stress buster. For instance, ‘star singer’ on Asia net draws more viewers than any educational programmes.

In my opinion, Television is the main vehicle for transmission of Education. It is used for formal and non-formal education. It stimulates learning and gives opportunity for mass education. It benefits the masses by making them conscious of the environment, their rights, duties and privileges.
